The appeal letter from
ST. BRIGID'S ALTAR SOCIETY

December 30, 1993

Most Reverend John Raphael Quinn
Archbishop of San Francisco
445 Church Street
San Francisco, CA 94114

Dear Archbishop Quinn:

The Altar Society of St. Brigid's Church prayerfully request your reconsideration of the closing of our Parish Church.

Our organization is a more "behind the scenes" group. Several members are retired and we attend Mass daily. Consequently we are able to maintain the tidiness of the Church on a daily basis. We launder the Altar cloths and the albs and surplices. We also do all our own flowers and decorating of the Altar. It is our privilege to help keep the House of the Lord neat and clean and to give it a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We also work with other groups to insure their activities run smoothly. We work with the Liturgy Committee, Sodality, ICF, and the priests for weddings and holy hour. We assist the RCIA during their Lenten Soup Masses in helping to set up the Altar for the celebration and instruct the candidates on the purpose and meaning of the various articles that are used for the Mass. At Easter Vigil we completely dress the Altar and explain the reasons to everyone in attendance.

St. Brigid Church has a real purpose in our community. It is very accessible to many -- especially to a number of seniors who can walk here daily. We have one blind lady who comes every week and we just let her stay and pray while we work. She just lets us know when she is ready to leave and one of us escorts her to the door and the outside and then she WALKS home.

We know every nook and cranny in the Church and it is all so meaningful to us and to all of the parishioners. We have an active parish and think it is a mistake to take away such a vital part of our lives. Please give this your prayerful consideration.

Sincerely in Christ,

M.S. & E.B.
