The appeal letter from
ST. BRIGID'S MEN SOCCER TEAM

12-28-'93

Dear Archbishop Quinn,

As a leading representative of St. Brigid soccer team, it is extremely disturbing the news, regarding the closure of St. Brigid Church.

As a soccer team we are very involved in the parish and are current champions of the 1992-1993 soccer season. Ninety per cent of our team consists of catholic players and one of the most noticeable influences we have on the church ( in the past ten years ) is the number of players each year who become members of the parish as well as those who choose to partake in the sacraments of baptism and marriage at St. Brigid Church.

Not only do we carry the name of St. Brigid Church in a sporting context, but also we have played a major dominant role in bringing new members into our church via our RCIA program. Several members of the soccer team as recently as April 1993 were involved with the RCIA in the baptism of a number of adults and children, and we would not have been privileged to this momentus event if we were not part of St. Brigid church.

As a soccer club, we are involved in other parishes, and given our leadership we have inspired other parishes throughout San Francisco to be involved in both sporting activities and their church.

Given today's society, it is extremely frightening the ramifications which the closure of so many churches in San Francisco may have. I personally worry for the future of my children's spiritual guidance, especially given the fact that my children attend St. Brigid school. Given the closure of the church and inevitably the closure of the school, where does this put our young children of today who will be tomorrow's influence on the world. I also feel strongly with my wife that a catholic school without a parish lacks serious consideration of its needs and is not credible to a faith filled community.

Closing St. Brigid church would be a major mistake and we the members of St. Brigid soccer team who love our parish appeal to you to please listen to this communities appeal. Our spiritual needs are met profoundly at St. Brigid, we see no reason for change. We enjoy our activities at St. Brigid, our community, our school, and our religious services. The closure of St. Brigid would affect my respect for the church gravely in the way this has been handled and in how unfairly we feel we have been treated. Our parish is worth its place in the diocese of San Francisco.
