Established in 1972, "Martin de Porres House" is a free restaurant located on Potrero Avenue in San Francisco. It has no paid staff. It is not a business, and all donations go directly to those who need them most. It gets no assistance from any Church or government agency and is supported entirely by donations from individuals.
The house's motto of "gentle personalism" says that all people have dignity, and all persons have the right to be respected. Martin's believes that each person who comes to the house is a guest, and will be treated as such. It says that eating is a right, not a privilege, and that feeding the hungry is a matter of justice, not of charity.
